Résumé
pressure difference between the blade sides drives leakage, which participates in complex vortical structures that interact with the main stream flow. This interaction produces substantial losses, accounting for up to one-third of the total. Tip leakage flow is also responsible for stall inception and noise emission due to the strong, unsteady mechanisms involved. An increase in tip clearance can result in a noise increase of up to 15 dB. This study aims to advance understanding of complex flow structures and noise generation mechanisms. A rectilinear compressor cascade geometry with a tip clearance of 1.6% chord has been simulated using wall-resolved Large Eddy Simulation (LES). This configuration is based on the experimental setup of the Cascade Wind Tunnel operated at Virginia Tech (VT). The operating conditions can be modified by adjusting the incident flow angle. Two operating conditions, best efficiency point and maximum pressure rise are investigated for the assessment of tip leakage flow and its associated noise. Far-field noise has been computed using the Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings analogy. A noise increase of up to 10 dB has been observed in certain frequency ranges. The modal decomposition of the tip gap flow dynamics is employed to identify the noise sources. At maximum pressure rise, the low frequency increase is associated with the early breakdown of the tip leakage vortex. This results in the blockage of cascade, which induces disturbances that are shed up to the leading edge of the neighboring blades. This work is a first step towards identification of key parameters for noise model development.
