Résumé

Helical steel piles (HSPs) are a specialized type ofenergy pile designed to efficiently integrate geothermal energyinto building foundations. Traditionally used as structuralsupports, HSPs can also function as heat exchangers, reducinginstallation costs and complexity compared to conventionalgeothermal systems that require extensive borehole drilling. This study employs the finite line source (FLS) analytical modelto evaluate the thermal performance of HSPs, validating itsaccuracy against numerical simulation models. Numericalsimulations are then used to analyze the short-term behaviourof HSPs, while the FLS model assesses long-term performance.By simulating the thermal behaviour of HSPs on an hourly basisover multiple years and iterating across various pile heights, thisstudy determines the optimal sizing of HSPs to effectivelyaccommodate a synthetic balanced heat load while maintainingtemperatures within the operational limits of heat pumps. Theresults confirm that the FLS model is both accurate andefficient, capable of simulating mid- and long-termperformance more quickly than detailed simulation. Byintegrating short-term numerical simulations with the mid- andlong-term results from the FLS model, the study demonstratesthat HSP thermal performance can be accurately modeledacross the entire time spectrum with high precision andsignificantly reduced computational effort. These results canalso be used for sizing the HSPs to handle every arbitrarybalanced or unbalanced heat load.
