Résumé
This study examines the feasibility of harnessing train-induced airflows as a renewable energy source in Vancouver's SkyTrain metro stations, using Burrard Station as the main test site. Airflow data were collected with high-precision anemometers, and Dirichlet Process Mixture Models (DPMM) were used to analyze wind speed distributions. A small Archimedes-type turbine was tested in controlled conditions, achieving a maximum output of 202.5 mW and motor efficiencies between 20.3% and 59.0%.Economic analysis using RETScreen revealed capacity factors of 25.01% for the Burrard-to-King George route and 10.84% for the Burrard-to-Waterfront route. However, extended payback periods (50-133 years) and negative internal rates of return (-5.7% to -12.1%) were observed. Despite these economic challenges, the system achieved a 93% reduction in carbon emissions, aligning with Vancouver’s climate goals. This research highlights the environmental benefits of train-induced wind energy in urban transit systems and emphasizes the need for better turbine designs, cost-reduction measures, and supportive policies.
